Sales Performance Dashboard: From Raw Orders to Executive Insight
Start with this open project to see the mentoring style before subscribing. It shows how a learner is guided from a business question to data cleaning, calculations, dashboard planning, insights, and presentation.
High discounts lift sales in Furniture, but margins need review.
Clean, calculate, compare, visualize, and explain.
Every step includes what guided review helps the learner improve.
The full sample project
A complete beginner-friendly sample showing how a learner moves from raw order data to cleaned data, business metrics, dashboard design, insights, and final presentation.
Project Scenario
A regional retail team wants to understand monthly sales trends, category contribution, regional performance, discount impact, and products that need attention. The learner receives sample order data and builds a dashboard that answers a real business question instead of only displaying charts.
Project Objective
Build a one-page Power BI or Tableau dashboard that helps a manager answer: Which categories, regions, and products are driving revenue and profit, where are discounts hurting margin, and what should the team act on next?
Sample Dataset
The project can be practiced with a small retail-orders table. In a full mentoring session, the learner may use a larger CSV, but the structure below shows the exact fields and reasoning path.
| Order ID | Order Date | Region | Category | Product | Units | Unit Price | Discount % | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SO-1001 | 2026-01-08 | South | Technology | Wireless Mouse | 4 | 24.00 | 5 | 58.00 |
| SO-1002 | 2026-01-12 | West | Furniture | Office Chair | 2 | 185.00 | 15 | 275.00 |
| SO-1003 | 2026-02-03 | East | Office Supplies | Notebook Set | 12 | 6.50 | 0 | 42.00 |
| SO-1004 | 2026-02-18 | North | Technology | Monitor | 3 | 210.00 | 10 | 510.00 |
| SO-1005 | 2026-03-06 | South | Furniture | Standing Desk | 1 | 420.00 | 20 | 355.00 |
End-to-End Walkthrough
Clarify the question
- Write the business question before building visuals.
- Decide the user of the dashboard: regional manager, sales head, or category manager.
- Choose success measures: revenue, profit, profit margin, discount impact, and month-over-month movement.
Guided mentoring helps the learner move from 'make a dashboard' to a sharper decision question, so the project has direction.
Inspect and clean the data
- Check date format and create Month and Quarter fields.
- Confirm Units, Unit Price, Discount %, and Cost are numeric.
- Look for missing product names, inconsistent region spelling, duplicate Order IDs, and impossible discounts.
- Create a short data-quality note so the learner can explain what was cleaned.
The review process asks learners to justify whether a row should be corrected, removed, or flagged.
Create business metrics
- Gross Sales = Units x Unit Price.
- Discount Amount = Gross Sales x Discount %.
- Net Revenue = Gross Sales - Discount Amount.
- Profit = Net Revenue - Cost.
- Profit Margin = Profit divided by Net Revenue.
Each formula is connected to business meaning, so the learner understands why a KPI matters and when it can mislead.
Build the dashboard page
- Top row: KPI cards for Revenue, Profit, Margin, Orders, and Average Order Value.
- Middle row: monthly revenue/profit trend and category contribution.
- Bottom row: region comparison, product table, and discount-vs-margin view.
- Add filters for month, region, and category.
Visual choices are guided by comparison, trend, diagnosis, and action rather than decoration.
Read the dashboard and form recommendations
- Identify the strongest revenue category and compare it with the strongest profit category.
- Find where high discounts are not producing enough profit.
- Spot products with good sales but weak margins.
- Write three manager-facing recommendations.
Learners are pushed to explain what changed, why it matters, what action is reasonable, and what cannot be concluded from the data.
Prepare the final project story
- Create a one-page summary with the business question, method, dashboard view, key insights, and next steps.
- Practice a two-minute explanation of the dashboard.
- Document limitations such as sample size, missing customer data, or lack of marketing-spend information.
The final review helps polish the story so it sounds professional in a class presentation, portfolio discussion, or workplace review.
Core Calculations
Gross Sales
Units x Unit Price Shows sales before discounts and helps measure original demand.
Net Revenue
Gross Sales - Discount Amount Shows what the business actually earns after discounts.
Profit
Net Revenue - Cost Shows whether sales are financially healthy.
Profit Margin
Profit / Net Revenue Allows fair comparison across products and categories of different sizes.
Dashboard Blueprint
- KPI cards: Net Revenue, Profit, Profit Margin, Orders, Average Order Value.
- Line chart: Monthly Net Revenue and Profit trend.
- Bar chart: Revenue and Profit by Category.
- Map or bar chart: Regional comparison.
- Scatter or matrix: Discount % compared with Profit Margin.
- Product table: Product, Revenue, Profit, Margin, Units, and recommendation flag.
Example Insights Learners Should Be Able To Explain
- Furniture may show strong revenue but weaker margin when large discounts are applied.
- Technology products may contribute fewer orders but higher profit per order.
- A region with high revenue is not automatically the best-performing region if cost and discount pressure are high.
- Products with repeated discounts and low margin should be reviewed before running the next promotion.
Final Presentation Structure
- Business question: Which sales areas are performing well, and where is profit being lost?
- Method: cleaned order data, created revenue/profit measures, compared trends, categories, regions, and product-level margin.
- Recommendation 1: Review high-discount furniture products before extending promotions.
- Recommendation 2: Protect margin on strong technology products and study whether demand holds with smaller discounts.
- Recommendation 3: Track monthly profit margin, not only monthly sales, before making region-level decisions.
Mentoring Focus
- Define the core question: what should a manager be able to decide after viewing the dashboard?
- Check data quality, date formats, missing values, duplicate orders, and category consistency.
- Build measures for revenue, profit, discount rate, average order value, and month-over-month change.
- Choose visuals that support comparison, trend reading, and quick diagnosis.
- Prepare a short narrative: what happened, why it matters, and what action should be considered.
What Learners Build
- Cleaned dataset and transformation notes
- Power BI or Tableau dashboard layout
- KPI cards, trend chart, category breakdown, region view, and product drill-down
- One-page insight summary for presentation
What They Learn
- Learners understand how to move from data to insight, not just from data to chart.
- They practice explaining analytical choices clearly during review.
- They leave with a project structure they can adapt for coursework, interviews, or workplace reporting.
